Australia’s worst air crash in 40 years claimed 15 lives at Lockhart River on Cape York 7th May 2005. A memorial service in Cairns saw huge outpourings of grief as families came to terms with the tragedy. Amongst the victims was young police officer Sally Urquhart . Her fiance Trad Thornton – and family – mother Elizabeth, dad Shane, brother Brendan and sister Natalie – are inconsolable.

The Boxing Day 2004 tsunami in Asia decimated countries bordering the Indian Ocean, claimed almost three hundred thousand lives and left many millions homeless. This collection of photographs culled from my short journeys to Banda Aceh Indonesia, Phuket and Khoa Lak Thailand and southern Myanmar won two awards “across all media”.

One year old Alhamdee sheds a tear in a refugee camp in Banda Aceh Indonesia after the Boxing Day tsunami brought massive devastation. One of countless homeless with insufficient food and water in Aceh’s refugee camps, Alhamdee also lost his father, brother, grand parents and uncle and is left with only his mother.

Badly injured Laurie Kerr walks unaided into Royal Darwin Hospital Australia 13th October 2002 – just a day after the Bali Indonesia terrorist bomb blasts. Kerr was on the first airlift out of Bali to Darwin along with others severely injured.

An elderly refugee, one of the first airlifted from East Timor, sheds tears as she seeks the comfort of a nun on arrival at the Darwin refugee centre 14/09/1999 – the day the United Nations compound in Dili was evacuated. The UN compound had been under siege from armed militia since the East Timorese voted overwhelmingly for independence from Indonesia.

86 year old Arthur Stanley Brown was arrested and ordered to stand trial in Townsville for the brutal murder of the Mackay sisters, Judith (7) and Susan (5) 29 years previously. The photo of Brown and his wife Charlotte was taken during a break in proceedings from outside the court. All charges were dropped due to Brown’s deteriorating state of health. He died a year later and was never found guilty of the murders.

On 17th July 1998 three ten metre waves slammed into the coast of the West Sepik province of Papua New Guinea, wiping entire villages off the map. I was amongst the first to reach the remote Sissano Lagoon disaster area – and this photo of Coretta Yorenti, suffering a fractured skull, was transmitted to Associated Press by sat phone and was the first image to reach the outside world.

The murder of Japanese girl Michiko Okuyama in Cairns Australia sent media into a frenzy. Her body was found dumped in a Cairns swamp and a 16 year old youth was arrested for her murder. Despite police assurances that the accused had already been sent to Brisbane detention I staked out the police air wing for days – before being rewarded with the only photographs of the accused – in some obscuring his face so the photo could be published in Australia.

6 year old Tjandamurra O’Shane was doused with petrol by a stranger in his school playground and set alight. He was rushed to Hospital with burns to 70% of his body. Paul Wade Streeton was arrested and charged with attempted murder. On the day Streeton was found guilty at the Cairns Court months later Tjandamurra’s father stopped his car briefly outside the court. Tjandamurra, with burn scars still evident, faced the scene where his attacker was being judged.
