A young refugee, one of the first airlifted from East Timor, clutches a statue of the Virgin Mary as her mother sheds a tear at the Darwin Australia refugee centre 14/09/1999 – the day the United Nations compound in Dili was evacuated. The UN compound had been under siege from armed militia since the East Timorese voted overwhelmingly for independence from Indonesia.
