‘Winning’ at The Percivals …

… really nice to get a ‘WIN’ of sorts at the The Percival Portrait Prize in Townsville on the weekend.

On Saturday eve my portrait of highly respected Australian artist Tony Clark … made in his tin shed studio at Mission Beach whilst he prepared works for his massive “Unsculpted” exhibition in Melbourne last year … was announced as Runner-Up and ‘Highly Commended’ in the photographic portrait prize. (Top image and third image below.)

The biennial Percival Portrait Prize announcement opening eve at the historic Perc Tucker Gallery was packed to the rafters with invited attendees and a terrific event. The prize has grown massively in stature since its inception way back in 2007 and now attracts art works from Australia’s most talented creatives. The prize is split into three sections … portrait painting, photographic portraiture and animal portraits.

This year the three prizes were judged by very prestigious art experts. The photographic prize was judged by the delightful Serena Bentley … vastly experienced Senior Curator at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra (bottom pic at Saturdays opening). Many Thanks, Serena, for selecting my work “Unsculpted – Australian Artist Tony Clark” to a second place. (It was pleasure being interviewed briefly by Serena during Sunday mornings ‘Judges Talks’.)

The painting prize was judged by renowned art historian, critic and curator Sasha Grishin, who took pains to declare the Percivals painted works more favourable this year than the Archibalds ! Respected art lecturer Ron McBurnie had the fun job of selecting the best of the animal portrait entries.

I also had a further exhibit on the Percival walls. A photographic portrait I’m very fond of featuring friend and subject David Glasheen (who we have sadly recently lost to this World), entitled “Millionaire Castaway”, was also selected as a finalist. (Image 2 below.)

Tasmanian Cassandra McMahon beat me to the $10,000 acquisitive Percival Photographic Portrait Prize with her great work “Empty Vessel”, whilst Elena Churilova collared the painting portrait prize of $40,000 with her work “Smartphonisation”. ‘Animals’ winner was Catherine Stewart with “Eye On The Weather”.

A great and rewarding weekend and well worth the visit to our ‘lesser’ neighbour down the coast 😉 .

Thank you to the Townsville City Council who do an amazing job administering the very special awards … and to the great staff of the Perc Tucker Gallery (special mention for curatorial assistant Chloe Lausen – in 3rd pic below installing the exhibition – from the Townsville Bulletin) … to the judges (in particular photographic judge Serena – bottom pic at the opening) … not forgetting the many artists, friends, family and interested parties who made the weekend so special.

(Oh yes … satisfyingly, it’s now five times in a row that my work has been featured amongst the Percival finalists … and you may see my previous selected portraits here … 2024202220202018.)

Two Selected in Percival Portrait Prize …

… just in ! Delighted to learn that two of my portraits have been selected amongst the ‘Finalists’ in the prestigious “Percival Photographic Portrait Prize”.

The biennial prize … held in conjunction with the “Percival Portrait Prize” for painting … is one of the major portrait events in Australia and attracts top artists in both creative expressions from around the country.

All the finalist works will be exhibited on the expansive walls of the stately Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in Townsville, with the exhibition launch eve and announcement of the prize winners on the 23rd of May. In a strange scenario the painting prize winner receives a $40,000 prize whilst the photographic portrait winner only warrants a $10,000 award. (not to be sniffed at though 😉 ). Looks like a little trek to Townsville for the eve …

It’s the fifth time in a row that my work has been selected amongst the Percival finalist mix … and you may see the previous selections here … 2024, 2022, 2020, 2018.

My two selected portraits in this years prize … both of which have received accolades in other awards and you may already be aware of … are “Unsculpted – Australian Artist Tony Clark” (top) and “Millionaire Castaway – David Glasheen”(bottom).

You may view all this years Percival painting and photographs portraiture finalists here.

Dodho Published Again … & Looking Good at the Percival’s …

Nice chunky parcel dropped into my PO box this week. Inside was the Dodho Magazines hard cover book of the works selected as Finalists in the 2024 Dodo Portrait Prize. A really nice publication and collection …

So pleased to find that my image of Kuranda based artist Peter “Potter” Thompson (top) looking great across a whole page. If anyone deserves the recognition it’s Peter and the image title … “Do Not Resuscitate – Peter ‘Potter’ Thompson” … may give a clue to why.

A Master Ceramicist, Peter ‘Potter’ Thompson has been working the kilns in the Kuranda rainforest studio that he has called home for over fifty years. Peter – amongst Australia’s most accomplished practitioners of wood-fired kiln pottery – is something of a miracle having survived three heart attacks over his career producing imaginative Asian/Taoist inspired works that have graced galleries far and wide. On his pace maker heart chest is tattooed ’N F Resuscitare’ (‘Do Not Resuscitate’) and his blood group – a testament to his dry sense of humour.

This image of Peter has also been recognised in the 2024 Tokyo International Foto Awards (TIFA), the 2023 Pollux International Awards and Australia’s Capture Awards. Thanks Peter !

Recently I also visited the Perc Tucker Gallery in Townsville where three of my other images graced the walls in the Percival Photographic Portrait Prize … “George at the Bus Stop – Dr George Skeene OAM”, “Last of the Trochus Divers – Albert ‘Boyo’ Ware” and “100 Years & 3 Weeks – Alf Neal OAM” (see the other two pics below). The Townsville council host a fabulous show of portrait photography which is accompanied by the works of artists who prefer to use paints … The Percival Portrait Prize. Both shows are worth some time exploring and are open until September 1st.

Three (New) Images Selected in Percival Portrait Prize …

Chuffed that three of my portraits are getting their FIRST award recognition after being selected yesterday (Friday) as Finalists in the bi-annual Percival Portrait Prize. They will be exhibited on the gracious walls of the historic Perc Tucker Gallery in Townsville.

The award runs in conjunction with the Percival Painting Portrait Prize and attracts entries from around Australia and Internationally.

Nice to see these three more recent images selected … ‘Covid Vax & Ice Cream’ (top – Leanne at Yarrabah after her Covid vaccination),  ‘Mother Africa’ (centre – African American Aurora Coulter) and ‘Graham Elms – Legendary Larrikin’ (bottom) … all made in far north Queensland in the last few months.

‘Covid Vax & Ice Cream’ was made for a The Australian story on the door to door vaccination program in the indigenous community of Yarrabah. ‘Mother Africa’ … of Colorado USA raised African American Aurora Coulter …  was made to depict the historic plight of black Americans, an issue very close to Aurora’s heart. ‘Graham Elms – Legendary Larrikin’ was made for a Sunday Mail series on … well … ‘Larrikins’. Graham is your archetypal far north Queensland bad boy of old.

It’s now three ‘Percival’s’ in a row that I have had work selected to be exhibited … three works in 2018 hereand two in 2016 here

The winners of this years Percival Photographic Portrait Prize will be selected and announced at the exhibition opening at Perc Tucker Gallery in Townsville on the 23rd April and will show till July 3rd.

Three … Percival Photographic Portrait Prize

Really pleased to have three portraits selected, physically printed, framed and hung on the walls of the Perc Tucker Gallery in Townsville … finalists in the biennial ‘2020 Percival Photographic Portrait Prize’ … but … strangely no one is allowed to see them there !

Due to the Covid-19 virus the gallery is still firmly closed. The gallery is hoping that they will be able to open after Queensland’s Stage 2 round of restriction lifting on the 12th June, but that is far from certain. The exhibition runs until 19th July.

In the meantime will have to make do with a ‘virtual tour’ of the work as hung in the cavernous Perc Tucker Gallery. The photographic portraits are mixed on the walls with the generally larger works of the portrait painting prize … so finding specific works is ‘virtually’ problematic. Not a fan of the mixture of painting works and photographic images sharing the walls that’s for sure. Many … if not most … of the photographic works are dwarfed by massive (sometimes gaudy) paintings … but it is nice knowing they are ‘there’.

To save you searching ‘virtually’ … here are my three works that made the cut … ‘Generations – Aurukun’, (bottom) ‘Tomotaro on the Block’ (centre) … and great to see it getting it’s first recognition … ‘Kate … Waiting For Her New Breasts’ (top). (Massive Thanks again Kate !) Both ‘Generations … ‘ and ‘Tomotaro … ‘ have received a lot of recognition previously … just check back through my blog or go to my ‘Awards’ page here.

If you are up for the challenge and would like to attempt see the works that make up the combined Percival exhibitions try here … https://www.townsville.qld.gov.au/facilities-and-recreation/theatres-and-galleries/perc-tucker-regional-gallery/percival-portrait-painting-prize#top … best of luck.
